He was the son of the late Alton George and Wilma K. Spencer-Shoemaker.
At the age of 17, he joined the United States Navy, where he was stationed on the U.S.S. Doran during World War II. He worked for 32 years at Armco Steel as an inspector. He loved his grandchildren and taught them the meaning of hard work. He enjoyed Sunday dinners at Texas Roadhouse and visits to Mountaineer Casino.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Michetti-Spencer; a brother, Frank Spencer, and a sister, Jean Fitzgerald.
Surviving are his only son, Marino "Mark" (Patty) Spencer, Freedom; grandchildren, Dustin (Ashley) Spencer, New Sewickley; Markie Spencer, Baden; Samantha Spencer, Freedom; Kamryn Spencer, Freedom, and Brandon Spencer, Rimersburg; great-grandchild, Eli Spencer, Freedom, and lifelong friend, Kathy Bushik, Ambridge.
Friends will be received Friday, February 3, 2017 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the KASPER-HAHN FUNERAL & CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 547 Eighth Street, Ambridge, (724) 266-2549. Interment will be held at a later date.
